Q: Don’t I have to be flexible to be able to do yoga?
A: Absolutely Not! Flexibility comes with time, patience and body type- some people are very flexible naturally and flexibility is never an issue. (Though often for this body type strength may be). Most of us though are not super bendy, even with years of a yoga practice. Therefore every posture is taught bearing this in mind. The most important point of a yoga practice is to find out what your body wants and needs...not to be the most pretzel like person in the class!
Q: What should I wear to class?
A: Comfortable clothing that you feel free to move, stretch AND sweat in. You can really work up a sweat while practicing so you might want to layer so you can take items off as you start to warm up. It is not customary to wear socks while practicing, so please be prepared to “disrobe” those feet!
Q: Do I have to sign up for class beforehand, or can I just come?
A: No pre-registration is necessary. If it is your first time to the studio however, you might like to come about 15 minutes early to familiarize yourself with the studio, fill out our registration form, meet the teacher and ask any questions you may have.
Q: Do you have mats?
A: Yes we do. We also have blocks and straps. Though the mats are cleaned after every use, you may want to think about investing in a mat if you start practicing on a regular basis....though we talk about “non-attachement”, you will be amazed at how quickly you grow to love your mat! Not all mats are the same, and you might realize that you have a preference about what you want in a mat and want some guidance. Every yoga practitioner has a different opinion about what kind of mat they like to practice on and why, so ask around....our instructors (and other Shambhala students) will be more than happy to help you out when choosing a mat.
Q: Huh, what did the instructor just say? Why does everyone seems to know exactly what is happening but me...even in the fundamentals class?
A: Don’t stress! There is a learning curve for everything new you try, and yoga is no exception. Our instructors know that and will help you out when you need it. Just remember that EVERYONE in class was in the same place in the not too distant past. You will be amazed at how quickly you learn the terminology and flow. Our bodies have amazing muscle memory.
Q: What do classes cost and can I pay by credit card?
A: Classes are $15 for a drop in. We have various packages that are listed on our rates and hours page. You can pay by credit card, cash or check.
